Torch Song for Tiki
The Coconut Grove. Trader Vics. Don the Beachcombers. The Outrigger. Tiki Bob's. The Tropicana. And now, the Aku Aku Motel in Woodland Hills. One more Tiki relic soon to succumb to the foreboding sameness that's been steadily steamrolling our wild and wayward, beautiful past.
What are they thinking?
The Aku Aku Motel is the last remaining example of Tiki motel architecture in the west San Fernando Valley. Popularized by G.I.'s during the post-WWII years, Tiki culture took hold to an extent no one expected, proliferating in a vast array of commercial and residential establishments.
Today, sadly, nearly all traces of the Tiki phenomenon have become extinct. But the Aku Aku motel (despite some inappropriate modifications over the years) is not yet lost. There is still time for the owners of the Aku Aku to rethink a recent BAD IDEA to "mediterranean-ize" the motel's facade. Ugh!
Wake up your inner Picasso ["Taste is the enemy of creativeness"], and Go with the Lava Flow! May Tiki rein again.
Now get in that Conga line and let's save the Aku Aku!
Zombie anyone? ;o]
